Sticky Forms in Design

“Ambiguities of this sort may be divided into those which, once understood, remain an intelligible unit in the mind; those in which the pleasure belongs to the act of working out and understanding.” ~ Empson, William. Seven Types Of Ambiguity

Fitting into a Formal Language

If ambiguity is crucial in translating the obscure, then the physicality of the obscure needs to present enough capacity for legibility. The legibility of objects occurs when unpredicted connections are identified and stick. This stickiness permits objects to transform from a flat surface into a three dimensional one.

As the transformation shapes from ambiguous to less ambiguous, the legibility of the forms pull at each other. What arises from this is a language of different elements that fit, or, “stick” to each other

Stickiness gives the ability to integrate unrelated elements into a new continuous mixture.

It is then up to the reader to understand the relationship of those elements.
